July 30, 2009 | Women's Basketball
ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia's Ashley Houts was named to the "Wade Watch" list of 25 leading candidates to earn Wade Trophy National Player of the Year honors during the 2009-10 season. The list was released on Thursday by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
Houts, a 5-6 native of Trenton, Ga., also is expected to be a leading candidate for the WBCA's Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award, which is given annually to the nation's top senior who is 5-8 or under.
Houts is a two-time All-SEC performer and also earned SEC Freshman of the Year accolades in 2007. A three-year starter for the Lady Bulldogs at point guard, last season Houts broke her own Georgia single-season record for minutes played by averaging 37.7 mpg while playing every minute in 21 of 32 games. She also led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring (12.0), assists (4.7), steals (2.2), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.36) and free throw percentage (.779).
This summer, she was a member of the U.S. National Team that captured the Gold Medal at the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia. Houts averaged 8.3 points per game by connecting on 52.6 percent of her field goal attempts, 47.1 percent of her three-pointers and 90.9 of her attempts at the line. She also averaged 1.7 steals and 1.6 assists for the undefeated American squad.
Now in its 33rd year, the State Farm Wade Trophy is named after the late Lily Margaret Wade, who coached Delta State University to three successive national titles between 1975-77. The Wade Trophy debuted in 1978 as the first-ever women's national player of the year award in college basketball. This highly prestigious award, regarded as the "Heisman of Women's Basketball," is organized by the WBCA, in conjunction with the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS).
The 2010 State Farm Wade Trophy winner will be announced at the WBCA National Convention, held in conjunction with the 2010 NCAA Women's Final Four, in San Antonio, Texas, April 2-6.
