Bulldog Volleyball Camps Promote The Growth Of The Sport
July 20, 2009 | Volleyball
ATHENS, Ga. -- The University of Georgia Bulldog Volleyball Camps have been a huge success in 2009 with over 500 athletes training during the summer camp series.
Athletes from across the country and even a few international attendees have sweat through their Bulldog Camp t-shirts at one of Georgia's camp sessions learning the skills and systems of higher level volleyball.
“We have been very pleased with the turnout for our summer camp series this year," Georgia head coach Joel McCartney said. "Realizing the level of our current economy is making us tighten the financial spending belts, it is nice to see that parents and families are still supporting their daughters in getting a camp experience.”
“The level of volleyball is growing in the state of Georgia and around the Southeast," McCartney added. "With the three summers our staff has hosted camps at UGA we are noticing a growing level of excitement and skill in the athletes and the volleyball community. There is a long way to go in placing volleyball on the same map as other more predominant sports in this region, but we are aiming to gain more recognition with every step we take. Summer volleyball camp is a great way to grow our sport in Georgia and we will continue to demonstrate how passionate we are about this lifetime game of ours with everything we do.”
The Bulldogs' summer camp series has featured six completed camps with one camp session remaining. All camp instruction takes place at UGA's $40-million Ramsey Student Center where the Georgia volleyball team competes in the fall. The completed camps included the skills camp, position camp, combination camp, day camp, training camp and the first of two team camps. The second team camp will be held July 23-26. The team camp gives teams an opportunity to train and compete together prior to the start of the high school year. The focus of the camp is team competition and strategies, but it also includes position training, team training and competitive drill instruction. For more information on the camps click here.
“I want to personally thank the many athletes that have participated in our summer camp series so far," McCartney said. "Although there is one additional team camp at the end of this week, we have already felt the success of a great summer of learning and fun.”
