Teresa Edwards To Emcee Lady Bulldog Banquet

April 08, 2009 | Women's Basketball

ATHENS, Ga. --- Teresa Edwards, a two-time All-American for Georgia and five-time Olympic medal winner, will emcee the Lady Bulldog Basketball 2009 awards banquet on Thursday evening at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.

The banquet will begin with an autograph session with the team at 6:00 p.m., with the dinner and awards beginning at 6:30.

"I've said many times that I believe Teresa Edwards is the greatest competitor to ever lace up a pair of hightops," Andy Landers said. "She was the Wilma Rudolph of women's basketball and pushed the envelope to help the game develop into what it is today. It's always special when she returns to Athens and we're excited about having her come home to help us acknowledge the achievements of our 2008-09 season."

A native of Cairo, Ga., Edwards arrived in Athens in the fall of 1982 and helped Georgia reach its first NCAA Final Four the following spring. In the summer of 1984, she was the youngest member of the first U.S. team to claim an Olympic Gold Medal in women's basketball.

All told, Edwards helped the Lady Bulldogs to an NCAA runner-up finish in 1985 and the 1983, 1984 and 1986 SEC Championships in addition to the aforementioned 1983 Final Four bid.

Edwards was then the backbone of the U.S. National Team entered in virtually every major international competition through the 2000 Olympics. She earned additional Gold Medals in 1988, 1996 and 2000, as well as a Bronze in 1992. In 1996, she was the single athlete chosen from 10,318 competitors representing 197 nations in 26 sports to recite the Athlete's Oath at the Opening Ceremony of the Centennial Games in Atlanta. Edwards capped her international career as co-captain of the 2000 Olympic Team.

Edwards also enjoyed a highly successful career as a professional player. She competed overseas in Italy, Japan, Spain France and Russia before playing a critical role in the development of the ABL, the first professional league in the U.S. following the Atlanta Olympics. Edwards was a player/coach for the ABL's Atlanta Glory. She later played two seasons with the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx.

Though she's never officially "announced" her retirement, Edwards has not played professionally since 2004; however, she still plays competitively in pick-up games on a daily basis. Edwards has served as a color analyst for FSN telecasts of women's basketball over the past two seasons.

Edwards credits much of her development to her collegiate career.

“My eyes were open and I was eager to learn,” Edwards said. “Coach Landers broke the game down like a puzzle in a million pieces. Once he broke it down, it all came together.

“He was the best teacher of the game I’ve ever seen,” she continued. “He turned the light bulb on in my life. He really showed me how one, two and three added up. Coach Landers helped me get my left hand and my right hand in order.”
