The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named Georgia freshman Torrin Lawrence the Men’s South Region Track Athlete of the Year last Thursday. This award came days after he was named the SEC Male Freshman Runner of the Year.

Shortly following the week of accolades, the true freshman finished seventh in the 200-meter dash for All-American honors to highlight the first day of the NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas.

Lawrence was fourth in the second heat of the 200 finals with a finish of 20.90 to take seventh.  He came into the meet ranked No. 2 in the nation in the 200 with a school-record time of 20.77.

In the prelims, Lawrence won the fourth heat after registering the second-fastest time of his career (20.79).  This was the second-fastest time of the prelims after Baylor’s Trey Harts, who eventually won the finals with a 20.63, placed first in the second heat with a time of 20.73.  Four of the eight finalists were from the SEC.

In addition, senior Justin Gaymon locked down the fifth All-America certificate of his career during the weekend championships.
