Lady Bulldogs Fall To Tennessee

February 06, 2009 | Women's Basketball

Knoxville, Tenn. --- Tennessee used a 9-0 run to open the second half to break open a tight contest en route to a 73-43 victory over Georgia on Thursday night.

Christy Marshall scored 16 points to lead Georgia (15-8, 5-3 SEC), while Ashley Houts added 11 points and Porsha Philips 11. Glory Johnson's double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds led Tennessee (17-5, 6-2 SEC).

The loss snapped Georgia's four-game winning streak that included victories over No. 17 Vanderbilt and No. 5 Auburn.

The victory was the 1,000th of Pat Summitt's career and came before a crowd of 16,058 at Thompson-Boling Arena.

"I'd rather not talk about the game itself," Andy Landers said. "I'm irritated right now. However, this was a historic achievement for Coach Summitt and the University of Tennessee. The thing that is most impressive is the consistency with which they competed over the past 35 years. They've done this over a very long period of time."

Johnson scored the first five points of the second half and freshman Shekinna Stricklen scored on back-to-back buckets as Tennessee pushed a 32-24 lead at half to 41-23 less than three minutes into the period.

Georgia started the game quickly and gained a 12-7 lead on a steal and layup by Houts with 16:35 left in the first half.

The Lady Vols responded with a 13-0 surge over the next 5:31 to build a 20-12 lead with 10:54 remaining in the opening period. Alex Fuller, the lone senior on the Tennessee roster, carried the Lady Vols offensively early on. Fuller entered the contest averaging 7.0 points per game but scored 11 in the first 5:08.

The Lady Bulldogs closed to within four points twice late in the half, but Angie Bjorklund's jumper just before the first-half horn pushed the lead back to eight.

The Lady Bulldogs will return home on Sunday when they host Arkansas in their "Pink Zone" outing against the Razorbacks at 2:30 p.m. ET.

The Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) "Pink Zone" initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA’s nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.

The WBCA announced earlier this week that more than 1,250 schools and organizations have already committed to participating in the 2009 initiative.

The first 2,500 fans at Sunday's game will receive pink shakers, and the first 1,000 kids will receive Pink Replica Georgia jerseys. In addition, the first 250 kids will be invited  to Hairy’s Birthday Bash, a post-game party with pink cupcakes.
