Bulldogs Give Pointers To 'Special' Riders

February 20, 2009 | Equestrian

ATHENS, Ga. --- On the eve of a big road competition, the Georgia Equestrian team on Friday took time to give a little instruction themselves.

At their new facility in Bishop, the Bulldogs welcomed a group of 20 special guests from the Special Olympics program of the Clarke County School Disrict.  All of the Special Olympians were treated to full tour of the Bulldogs' new horse farm, and were also given instruction on all aspects of the sport of Equestrian, including tack & equipment, riding and grooming of horses.

Fifteen members of the Equestrian team participated in the 90-minute session.  Junior Alex Finder and freshman Emma Lipman served as orgainzers for the event.  The entire squad has pledged 350 hours of community service during the 2008-09 school year.

"We're really excited to have this opportunity to give these Special Olympians a close-up look at our sport," Georgia head coach Meghan Boenig said.  "We always want to give back to the community that supports Georgia and our Equestrian team,  It was a very rewarding experience for our girls to have the Special Olympians as our guests today."

Georgia returns to the competition ring this Saturday in a dual meet at South Carolina that starts at 1:00 p.m.
