"In The Dugout" With Freshman Kristyn Sandberg

ATHENS, Ga. With the 2009 Georgia softball season now underway, fans can get to know the newest members of the Bulldog softball team with "In The Dugout" features on Georgiadogs.com.
The Georgia softball program welcomed 10 freshmen to the team this season, and the Bulldogs are off to a 3-1 on start after the first weekend of play. The first installment in this year's "In The Dugout" question and answer series is with Kristyn Sandberg, a catcher/infielder from Island Park, N.Y., who is majoring in Health & Physical Education.
Question: Why Georgia?
Answer: My aunt and uncle live about an hour from the school, the coaches and facilities here are awesome and the city of Athens is a wonderful.
Q: Who is your all time hero in athletics?
A: Todd Hundley and Mike Piazza. They were both catchers for the New York Mets and they both made me want to be a catcher even more. As a child, Todd Hundley was my favorite player but when he was traded, Mike Piazza became my new favorite Met and it's really awesome that he has become one of the greatest catchers to ever play the game.
Q: What is your most memorable moment in sports?
A: When I was playing 14 and under travel ice hockey I had the opportunity to play in the Nassau Coliseum, Madison Square Garden and win the New York State Championship all in one season. I also enjoyed being able to play basketball in Madison Square Garden my senior year in high school and coming back from being down the whole game and scoring the game winning basket.
Q: If you could play any other sport in college, what would it be?
A: Definitely ice hockey!
Q: What is the best advice you have ever received from a coach?
A: F.I.D.O. - Forget It and Drive On; and if believe in yourself and work hard, you can achieve anything you want.
Q: You wear the number 23 because...
A: I wear the number 23 because my dad always wore it playing softball. I guess you could say it’s a family thing because my little brother wears it too.
Q: What are your favorite hobbies?
A: Whenever I have time I like to go play hockey, but I pretty much love to go play any sport when I’ve got the time. I also enjoy playing video games, getting on the computer, talking with friends and hanging out with the team.
Q: Who is your favorite professional sports team?
A: New York Mets & New York Islanders.
Q: What song best describes you?
A: "Heart of a Champion" by Nelly.
Q: What is your favorite color?
A: You mean other than red and black? Blue!
Q: What is the best book that you have ever read?
A: Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.
Q: What is your most prized possession?
A: My ice hockey state championship trophy!
Q: Name one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you.
A: I was first chair string bass in orchestra for four years.
Q: Any pets?
A: I have two fish. Their names are pinky and neon. They are GloFish and are hot pink and neon yellow.
