Shrum a Leader in Final Season

November 04, 2009 | Equestrian

When Georgia equestrian rider Alicia Shrum graduates next spring, she hopes to have another ring on her hand — a third national championship ring, that is.

Shrum, a team co-captain who competes for the Bulldogs in Western Horsemanship, believes that this season has been going well and her team has the potential to get another championship ring.

“I hope we will be able to get another ring this year before I graduate,” Shrum said. “I feel really strong and that I am riding the best I ever have.”

After growing up in Georgia her entire life, when it came time to decide where she would attend college, Shrum said that her mind was pretty set on UGA. Along with a competitive equestrian team, Georgia also offered a strong academic setting.

Once she chose to major in Business, Shrum said she quickly narrowed her choices down to accounting and finance. Eventually, she settled on finance because it was interesting and she liked the wide variety of possible career paths.

“I’m not really sure what I want to do with my degree once I graduate,” Shrum said. “It has the possibility of opening up many different doors, depending on the career path I decide to take.”

Although she participates in a year-round sport that takes away from her time to look for jobs or internships, Shrum has been able to travel abroad and get some career-related experience with the UGA Athletic Association.

The summer before her junior year, she participated in a Study Abroad program that took her to two global financial centers — New York City and London.

“I had a great time in both cities because they are the finance capitals of the world,” Shrum said. “I also had the opportunity to do an externship with Frank Crumley (UGA Executive Associate Athletic Director for Finance and Business), and I learned a lot from him.”

Someone else that Shrum has also learned a great deal from is UGA western assistant coach Jimmy Frebes.

In his first season at Georgia, Frebes says that although he’s only been working with her a short time, he is impressed with her ability to lead.

“She is definitely a leader on the Western team,” Frebes said. “She’s very much the strong, silent type, but [she’s] always working hard to improve herself and to make her team better.”

Being one of the 13 seniors on the team, Shrum feels that this season will allow her to play a larger leadership role than before.

One of the activities the team had before the season started was a bonding day at Sandy Creek Park.

“It was a lot of fun and a great way to meet the freshmen,” she said. “They [got] to see right off how great our team works together. Our team is very tight and everyone … helps each other out. Leading by example helps to hold everyone at a top-notch standard.”

If Shrum and her team keep competing at a top-notch standard, she might be able to put that third ring on her finger.
