October 20, 2009 | Women's Basketball

ATHENS --- The Georgia Lady Bulldogs were picked to finish third in the SEC during the upcoming 2009-10 in pre-season balloting by a panel of SEC and national media members, league office in Birmingham announced on Tuesday.

In addition, seniors Ashley Houts and Angel Robinson were named first-team All-SEC. Georgia was the only team with two of the five first-team selections.

LSU received 12 of 20 votes picking the winner of the SEC Championship and compiled 206 points in the balloting. Tennessee was picked second with 190 points, followed by Georgia (156), Vanderbilt (126), Mississippi State (120), Florida (105), Arkansas (92), Auburn (85), Ole Miss (70), South Carolina (61), Kentucky (40) and Alabama (24).

Houts was a second-team All-SEC pick in voting by both league coaches and the Associated Press at the end of the 2008-09 season. Robinson was a second-team All-SEC choice of coaches and an honorable mention honoree by the AP.

Houts, a 5-6, senior from Trenton, Ga., led the SEC in minutes played for the second straight season in 2008-09, averaging 37.7 mpg. She also led Georgia and ranked among SEC leaders in scoring (No. 14 at 12.0), assists (No. 3 at 4.7), steals (No. 4 at 2.2), free throw percentage (No. 5 at .779) and assist-to-TO ratio (No. 6 at 1.4).

Last summer, Houts was the only SEC player to earn a spot on the U.S. National Team for the World University Games. She averaged 8.3 points en route to winning her second international Gold Medal in three summers. In 2007, Houts was the only rising sophomore in the nation on the U.S. squad that won the FIBA U21 World Championships.

Robinson, a 6-5, senior from Marietta, Ga., became the first Lady Bulldog in more than two decades to lead the SEC in rebounding last season. She averaged 9.3 boards per game, the first time a Georgia player topped the league stats since Tammye Jenkins in 1987-88. She also ranked No. 16 in scoring (11.5) and No. 2 in blocked shots (2.2).

LSU's Allison Hightower was named the pre-season SEC Player of the Year and joined Houts and Robinson on the All-SEC first team with Alexis Rack of Mississippi State and Shekinna Stricklen of Tennessee.
