UGA Volleyball Begins Five-Match Home Stand This Weekend
October 14, 2009 | Volleyball
ATHENS, Ga. - The University of Georgia volleyball team will play its next five matches at home in the friendly confines of the Ramsey Student Center starting with contests against South Carolina and ninth-ranked Florida this weekend.
The Bulldogs (11-7, 2-5 Southeastern Conference) start the home stand against South Carolina (10-7, 2-6 SEC) on Friday with first serve scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, and on Sunday, Georgia squares off against Florida (12-3, 6-2 SEC) at 1:30 p.m. The home stand will also include matches against Mississippi State (Oct. 23), Alabama (Oct. 25) and Auburn (Oct. 28).
When the Bulldogs meet the Gamecocks on Sunday, UGA will be looking to return to the win column after dropping a pair of tough road contests this past weekend at Tennessee and then 10th-ranked Kentucky. South Carolina enters the match up looking to snap a four-match skid. In the all-time series between the schools, Georgia leads 40-15 including wins in six of the last 10 meetings. Last year, UGA and USC split a pair of matches with the Gamecocks winning in Columbia and the Bulldogs earning victory in Athens.
Georgia's match on Sunday against Florida will be the Bulldogs' second match of the season against a top-10 ranked opponent following last week's close battle at Kentucky. The last time the two teams met in October of last season, Georgia snapped an 18-year, 45-match losing streak to the then eighth-ranked Gators with a 3-2 victory in Athens. That victory marked the first time Georgia had defeated a ranked opponent since 1995. Florida enters this weekend also looking to get back into the win column after falling at LSU this past Sunday, and the Gators will play at Auburn on Friday evening before traveling to Athens.
Admission is free to all regular season matches in the Ramsey Center. Friday's match against South Carolina will be "80's Night" with all promotional prizes being 1980's themed, a dance off for an I-pod and the first 150 fans receiving UGA magic-8 balls. Sunday's match against Florida will be "Dorm Challenge" day with the largest dormitory floor in attendance receiving free pizza, and the first 250 fans to that match will receive mini volleyballs.
