January 22, 2009 | Swimming & Diving
ATHENS, Ga. --- With only two meets remaining until the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships, the Georgia swimming and diving teams prepare for one of their toughest road competitions of the season when they face Tennessee Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn.
The men’s meet is scheduled to get underway at 11 a.m. and the women will start at 2 p.m. It will be one of the final meet opportunities for swimmers to compete for postseason roster spots and relay legs in preparation for conference and national meets. The SEC Championships will begin Feb. 18. The women’s NCAA Championships will begin March 19, while the men’s NCAA Championships start March 26.
This weekend’s meet will be the first matchup against an SEC opponent for both Georgia teams since they hosted Auburn in November. The women won the meet 167-128 while the men dropped a 163-136 decision.
“The Tennessee men and women are great teams and the challenge is going to be great,” head coach Jack Bauerle said. “We have won very few times up there, but we have been very fortunate to do well in the past few trips up there.
“For us, it’s down to the nitty-gritty and we are trying to see who will be filling out our rosters toward the end of the season,” he said. “This is a real important time for some of our kids, but they all have done a good job and have worked hard.”
In their last time out, the No. 1 Lady Bulldogs (6-0) defeated the No. 3 Texas Longhorns 159-141 on Jan. 10, extending their home winning streak to 65 consecutive dual meet victories. Georgia holds the clear advantage in the all-time series, holding a 25-3-1 record against No. 10 Tennessee and a 23-1-1 mark under Bauerle. It will be the seventh time, and sixth in a dual meet format, the Lady Bulldogs face a ranked team this season.
On the men’s side, the No. 12 Bulldogs (3-3) will be in action for the first time in two weeks, having lost to the No. 1 Texas Longhorns, 169-126. When it faces No. 11 Tennessee, Georgia will face the Volunteers with a 7-19 overall mark and a 7-15 record under Bauerle’s direction. The Bulldogs have won the last six meetings against the Volunteers. Tennessee will be the eighth team, seventh in a dual meet format, the Bulldogs have faced this season that has been ranked in the top 25.
A complete recap of the meets will be available at georgiadogs.com following the conclusion of the women’s meet Saturday. Georgia will conclude the dual meet portion of their season next weekend when it will face South Carolina and Alabama in a tri-meet scheduled for 2 p.m. Jan. 31 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
