Lady Bulldogs Knock Off South Carolina, 69-63
January 11, 2009 | Women's Basketball
ATHENS, Ga. --- Post players Porsha Phillips and Angel Robinson scored 14 points apiece and Ashley Houts chipped in 13 including four three throws in the final 24 seconds to lead Georgia (10-6, 1-1 SEC) to a 69-63 win over South Carolina (8-7, 0-2) before 4,456 fans at Stegeman Coliseum on Sunday.
“We executed very well not only as a basketball team, but also at times, individually," Andy Landers said following his 799th win as a collegiate head coach. "We made some plays on the offensive end and made some stops on the defensive end. We hit free throws coming down the stretch, and that’s what you hope for in close games.”
Phillips was not in the starting lineup for the first time this season but came off the bench to connect on 6-of-7 field goals and 2-of-3 free throws. Houts' linescore also included nine assists and four steals in 40 minutes, the ninth time overall and fifth straight game she's failed to see the bench.
South Carolina led by as many as five points in the first half before Georgia exploded on an 11-0 surge to grab a 27-21 lead with 2:26 left in the first half. Phillips did much of the damage, scoring seven points during the run.
The Lady Bulldogs entered the locker room with a 32-27 lead after Christy Marshall canned a three-pointer with two seconds remaining in the half, and Georgia quickly pushed its advantage to 39-29 two over two minutes into the stanza.
The Lady Bulldogs maintained a comfortable margin until a 7-0 Gamecock push made it 46-44. Georgia opened the lead back up to six points 90 seconds later and led 54-48 with 5:04 remaining before a five-point trip a three from Brionna Dickerson with a simultaneous foul by Robinson that resulted in two free throws pulled South Carolina within a single point.
The Gamecocks finally tied the game at 60-60 with 2:36 left and again at 63-63 before a driving lay-up by Houts with 1:10 left made it 65-63. Houts was fouled while driving to the hole late in the shot clock with 24 seconds left and then made both ends of a one-and-one. After another defensive stop, she connected on two more three throws with 10 seconds left to ice the victory.
The win prevented what could have been the first four-game losing streak in Landers' 30 seasons with the Lady Bulldogs.
Georgia will host Savannah State on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Stegeman Coliseum as Landers attempts to become just the fifth major college women's basketball coach to record 800 victories. He posted an 82-21 record in four seasons at Roane State Community College in Harriman, Tenn., before becoming the Lady Bulldogs' first and still only full-time head coach in 1979. Landers is 717-231 in 29-plus seasons in Athens.

“We executed very well not only as a basketball team, but also at times, individually. We made some plays on the offensive end and made some stops on the defensive end. We hit free throws coming down the stretch, and that’s what you hope for in close games.”
“I thought Houts played very well today, not only offensively, but defensively as well. She did a good job in handling the ball throughout the game. The best thing about the game for her was that she was in control of herself, she was in control of her team, and for the most part, she felt like she was in control of the Coliseum. Meredith Mitchell did some good things. Defensively, she was very effective, and offensively she played better than you would expect a freshman who hasn’t played that much.”
South Carolina Head Coach Dawn Staley
What hurt you today:
“We just beat ourselves today. We were not disciplined enough and Georgia took advantage of that.”
Game plan for today:
“Our game plan today was to not move screens and not give Georgia any open looks.”
On now being 0-2 in the conference:
“When we look at the rest of our season, we will look at it like we do for any other game. We have to be disciplined and we can’t veer off our track.”
Star players:
“Sutton was 6-for-7 on field goals and 1-for-1 on threes. I thought Dickerson did an outstanding job on both sides of the ball. We didn’t have Adams with that inside presence as much as we normally do. But we kept it close even without her inside and that is a good sign.”
