ATHENS, Ga. --- With the 2008 season underway, Bulldog fans can get to know the newest members of the Georgia volleyball team with “Getting To Know” features on georgiadogs.com. Next in the series is Kathleen Gates.
The 2008 recruiting class was ranked 30th by PrepVolleyball.com becoming the first-ever ranked recruiting class in school history.
Getting To Know Kathleen Gates:
Question: What do you like most about the city of Athens?
Answer: The town has a great music atmosphere and really supports the University.
Q: Your all time hero in athletics is?
A: Steve "Pre" Prefontaine.
Q: Your most memorable moment in sports is?
A: Winning the Crossroads Volleyball Tournament in Denver in 2007, which qualified my team for the USAV nationals.
Q: What age did you start playing sports?
A: At five years old. I was a member of a summer swim team.
Q: What is the earliest sports memory you have?
A: Winning the U8 Individual Championship trophy in the summer swim league at age eight.
Q: What (if any) pre-game superstitions or rituals do you have?
A: I always put on my left shoe first.
Q: What is the best advice you have ever received from a coach?
A: To strive for accuracy rather than perfection because there has only been one person that has ever been perfect.
Q: What celebrity would you most like to meet?
A: Tom Hanks.
Q: Who is your favorite singer/musical group?
A: The Beatles.
Q: What is your favorite movie?
A: The Bourne Ultimatum.
Q: Who is your favorite movie star?
A: Julia Roberts.
Q: What is your favorite TV show now? Do you have a favorite character on that show?
A: Grey’s Anatomy and George.
Q: What TV/movie character are you most like?
A: Kathleen Kelly from You’ve Got Mail.
Q: Name one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you.
A: I was in band from middle school to high school and played the French horn.
Q: Any pets?
A: A greyhound named Roo.
Q: If you could have dinner with any three people, present or past, who would they be?
A: Abraham Lincoln, Queen Elizabeth I and Louis XVI.
Q: What is your favorite vacation spot?
A: Carnes, Australia.
Q: What is the place that you haven’t traveled to, that you would most like to visit?
A: I would love to visit Greece.
Q: Who was your favorite teacher and what was your favorite subject in high school?
A: My favorite teacher was Mrs. Lawson Greenwood and she subsequently taught A.P. Chemistry, my favorite class in high school.
Q: What is your favorite quote/saying?
A: When you are not training, somewhere someone else is, and when you two meet she will win.
The Georgia volleyball team (7-4) will open up Southeastern Conference play this weekend. On Friday, Sept. 19, the Bulldogs will be in Gainesville, Fla., for a match against the Florida Gators at 7 p.m. ET, and on Sunday, Sept. 21, the Bulldogs will go to Columbia, S.C., for a 1:30 p.m. meeting with the South Carolina Gamecocks. The two matches this weekend will be the final two matches of Georgia’s season-long nine match stretch of games away from home.
