Georgia Riders A Well-Traveled Group

August 11, 2008 | Equestrian

ATHENS, Ga. --- The University of Georgia ranks among the nation’s Top 10 schools that send their students to study in foreign lands.  This summer, Georgia’s Equestrian team was certainly well represented in that group.

Seven Georgia riders participated in a wide variety of Study Abroad programs that took them all across the planet.  Like the student body at UGA, the majority of riders gravitated to programs in Western Europe.  Two members of the Hunt Seat squad, Amy Klebesadel and Alex Finder, both found prosperity and enrichment through their European studies.

Finder is a junior from Potomac, Md., who is majoring in both History and Italian.  Her 6-week stint in Verona, Italy, was a perfect compliment to her studies at home, she said.  In Verona she took classes in the History of the Renaissance and the Reformation, as well as a Global Issues class.

It was the out-of-class experience, however, that Finder seemed to remember more vividly.  Between classes and studying, she found time to bungee jump over a lake in Switzerland, cruise the Bay of Naples and cheer on the Italian soccer team in Euro Cup action.  “I think studying abroad proved to be the best six weeks of my life,” she said.  “It opened my mind and gave me so many once-in-a-lifetime experiences.”

Klebesadel  a sophomore from Agoura Hills, Calif., spent her six-week session in Paris, where she took classes in International Affairs and Geography.  She, too, found just as much value in the time she spent outside the classroom setting.  “I got the most meaning in being able to absorb French culture by living in its major metropolitan center,” she said.  Klebesadel also traveled to neighboring countries during weekend excursions.  “I’d say that studying abroad was the best decision I’ve made so far at UGA.”

The Georgia riders begin the defense of their 2008 national championship at a Sept. 20 home meet against Kansas State.
