Is It Possible To Play Volleyball At 5'9"

July 09, 2008 | Volleyball

Julia from Athens asks...

Being only 5'9, would it be possible to play as a middle/outside hitter in college volleyball?

Julia
Thank you for your question...

Ironically one of our starting Outside Hitters for the Bulldog volleyball program stands at 5’9” and is an exceptional athlete in the SEC conference. Erika Clark was named to the SEC All-Freshman team in 2007 and recently won the Gold Medal in the SEC Beach Tournament. Playing the Middle at 5’9” could be a bit of a stretch at the Division I level, but with the right kind of speed and jump reach it is not out of the question. All-in-all size is not the biggest factor in determining potential. I would take the heart of a feisty 5’9” Bulldog over a 6’2” Poodle.

Best regards,

Joel McCartney, VB head coach
