Georgia Tech Defeats Lipscomb, 6-3
June 01, 2008 | General
ATHENS, Ga. The second-seeded Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets advanced to the championship round of the Athens Regional in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championships by defeating the fourth seed Lipscomb Bisons, 6-3, on Saturday evening at Foley Field.
Lipscomb (33-29) falls to the loser’s bracket and will face one seed Georgia at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday. The winner of that game will advance to face Georgia Tech (41-19) in the championship round of the double elimination tournament at 6 p.m. If Georgia Tech falls to the winner of the Georgia-Lipscomb contest, an “if necessary” game would be played on Monday at 7 p.m. ET.
Freshman relief pitcher Taylor Wood (3-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Deck McGuire, who pitched into the seventh allowing three runs on six hits. Lipscomb junior starter Brandon McClurg took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits, while Yellow Jacket senior Brad Rulon recorded the final five outs of the game for his seventh save.
Georgia Tech senior Brad Feltes broke up a 3-3 tie with a two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning that proved to be the game winning hit. Feltes finished the game 2-for-3, and junior teammate Jason Haniger went 2-for-3 while providing the Yellow Jackets with their first three runs on a three-run home run in the second inning.
Lipscomb also got on the board in the second inning when it scratched across a run on a groundout from junior Branden Cadavid. Senior Blake Bratcher scored the run after walking and being advanced around to third on a single and a sacrifice bunt. In the fifth, Bratcher gave the game its 3-3 tie on a two-run double to center field.
The game held its tie score until Feltes two-run double in the eighth that scored junior Luke Murton and freshman Derek Dietrich, who both reached on singles. In the ninth, Georgia Tech added one more run on a single up the middle from senior Charlie Blackmon. Sophomore Patrick Long scored the run that gave the game its final margin after reaching on a fielder’s choice and stealing second.
“I thought it was a great ball game, and I know that we couldn’t breathe easy until we caught that last out,” Georgia Tech head coach Danny Hall said. “We were able to get some runs early and felt like we were in pretty good shape, and Deck (McGuire) was able to really mix up his pitches and everything he threw moved. He could throw all of his pitches right where he wanted them. We hit some balls hard and couldn’t find any holes. They fought hard and got back into the game. I thought our bullpen got some big outs. Taylor Wood came in and got a big out. Our pitching gave us a chance and (Brad) Feltes came up to the plate. There’s not a guy I’d rather see up there than him. He is a very clutch hitter. I tip my cap to Lipscomb. They played extremely well.”
