Four Bulldogs Begin Individual NCAA Tennis Championships May 21
May 20, 2008 | Men's Tennis
Georgia places four in singles and one pair in doubles action.
TULSA, Okla. The 2008 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships draws were announced Tuesday by the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship Subcommittee. The individual championships will be played May 21-26 in Tulsa, Okla. at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Georgia's four competitors will have less than 24 hours to rest and prepare between the start of play and their NCAA Team Championship match against Texas, Tuesday evening.
The singles draw will consist of 64 players. No. 4-seeded senior Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan.) will face Moritz Baumann of Wisconsin in the first round at 5 p.m. eastern Wednesday, May 21. Should each player advance, Helgeson could meet Tennessee’s Kaden Hensel in the second round. Hensel defeated Helgeson in the regular-season meeting between the Dogs and Vols, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Projecting Helgeson’s path to the singles championship match, he would have to face No. 1-seeded Somdev Devvarman of Virginia in the semifinals. The two have met twice this year with both matches being played in Tulsa, and splitting the two contests. Helgeson took down Devvarman in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, en route to winning the ITA All-America Singles National Championship in October. Devvarman then beat Helgeson in Monday’s national team semifinals in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The next Bulldog in the singles draw is #9-16-seeded sophomore Nate Schnugg (Medford, Ore.), who will grapple with Ruben Gonzales of Illinois in the Round of 64 at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Barring any early-round upsets, Schnugg will meet the tournament’s No. 2 seed, Florida’s Greg Ouellette, in the Round of 16. Continuing to project the results, Schnugg could meet his close friend and former doubles partner in the junior ranks, Texas’ Kellen Damico in the Round of 16.
Senior Luis Flores (Xalapa, Mexico), who was inserted into the draw from his second-alternate spot, has drawn the tournament’s No. 3-seeded player, Oleksandr Nedovyesov of Oklahoma State, in the first round. Flores, a two-time ITA Singles All-American who was formerly ranked in the Top-10 nationally, will take on Nedovyesov at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. If he advances through the first round, it is possible that he could face Brett Helgeson, the younger brother of Georgia senior Travis Helgeson, in the second round of the tournament.
The fourth Georgia player in the draw is sophomore Jamie Hunt (San Antonio, Texas), who will take on Illinois’ Ryan Rowe in the first round at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Should he advance to the next round, he could run into the tournament’s No. 6 seed, Robert Farah of USC. Projecting Hunt’s tournament path, he would also have to face No. 1 Devvarman, meeting him in the quarterfinals.
Helgeson is making his fourth appearance in the NCAA Singles Championships, making the draw every year of his career. This year marks his highest-ever seeding. He has reached the quarterfinals of the tournament twice, in 2006 as a member of the Texas Longhorns and in 2007 after his transfer to Georgia. Flores is making his third career appearance in the tournament. His best career finish was a round of 16 effort in 2007. This year marks the first appearances for both Hunt and Schnugg, who will also compete in the doubles portion of the tournament.
In the 32-team doubles competition, Hunt and Schnugg are the only Bulldogs in the draw. They open up play against Clancy Shields and Luke Shields of Boise State in the first round, Thursday, May 22.
If they advance through the Round of 32, they will face the winner of No. 2-seeded Robert Farah/Kaes Van’t Hof of USC and Ed Corrie/Kellen Damico of Texas, in the second round. Hunt and Schnugg have already faced both of those teams this year, defeating the Longhorns but losing to the Trojans. The Bulldog duo beat Corrie and Damico in Georgia’s 4-2 win against Texas in the quarterfinals of the ITA Team Indoor National Championships, 8-5. Furthermore, Hunt and Schnugg will face Corrie and Damico in the No. 1 doubles position as Georgia and Texas face off for the NCAA National Team Championship Tuesday evening, live on ESPNU. Hunt and Schnugg’s match against Farah and Van’t Hof was their first of the 2007-08 season, falling by an 8-6 score in the opening round of the Napa Valley Challenge in September.
