May 19, 2008 | Baseball

ATHENS, Ga. --- SEC Champion Georgia will be the top seed at the SEC Tournament and face No. 8 seed Ole Miss Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala. The seventh-ranked Bulldogs are 35-19-1 overall and led by head coach David Perno who is in his seventh season. They set a school record by going 20-9-1 in the SEC this year.

During the regular season, Georgia defeated Ole Miss two games to one in Athens (May 2-4). This will be the first time they have met in the SEC Tournament. Ole Miss is 34-22 overall and 15-15 in the SEC. Georgia is slated to start senior right-hander Nick Montgomery (2-1, 4.66 ERA). In his last start, which was the first of his Bulldog career, Montgomery defeated No. 25 Ga. Tech 3-2 last Tuesday at Turner Field in front of a crowd of 22,599. He went five innings and allowed one run on two hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Junior shortstop Gordon Beckham (.401-23-57, 16 SB, .959 FLDG%), a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, tied the school record for home runs in a season with his 23rd against Alabama. It was an opposite field, game-tying solo shot. On Saturday, he set the Bulldog record for runs scored in a season with 76. Beckham, an Academic All-America candidate too, ranks among the leaders in several NCAA and SEC offensive categories. He is second in the country in home runs, fourth in slugging percentage and sixth in runs scores. In 28 games against ranked opponents, Beckham is batting .380-9-26, and in SEC action, he batted .391-13-33.
