Georgia Volleyball Holds Annual Team Banquet

ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia volleyball team gathered this past Sunday evening to celebrate the 2007 season and to recognize the recent accomplishments of the spring season with its annual team banquet.
The banquet, which was held at the Hilltop Grille in Athens, included a dinner and an awards presentation. The 2007 volleyball team posted its first winning season in three years with a 17-13 overall record, which was an improvement of 11 wins over the 2006 squad’s 6-25 mark. During the spring season, the Bulldogs won the Commissioner’s Cup, which was awarded to the top team at the inaugural SEC Coaches Beach Volleyball Championships.
“We wanted to thank everyone for their investment for a tremendous first season together as we were able to produce the greatest turn-around in program history during the fall season,” head coach Joel McCartney said. “Also I couldn’t think of a more appropriate conclusion to the 2007-08 year by winning the inaugural SEC Coaches Beach Tournament and celebrating the event with our administrator and support staff at this occasion.”
Also as a part of the banquet, Craig White, Associate Athletic Director for Sports and Operations, addressed the banquet guests.
“I would like to say thanks to all of you for your effort in the successful fall season as well the spring season,” White said. “I have no doubt we have the right staff in place and that we are heading in the right direction with our volleyball team. I couldn’t be more proud of you all and the change that was made in our program over the course of this last year. There has been a dramatic change in the commitment to excellence with this program and again I want to thank coach McCartney and you all for that.”
Several awards were presented to the volleyball student-athletes at the banquet including individual replicates of the 2008 SEC Coaches Beach Championship trophy being awarded to the 11 individuals who competed at the event.

McCartney noted that the Bulldog Award was presented to Martin for her unselfish commitment to play injured through the season being a testament for how tough a Bulldog and volleyball athlete that she is on the court.
