April 18, 2008 | Equestrian
ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia continued its impressive showing at the Varsity Equestrian Championships on Friday at Waco, Texas. Both Hunt Seat and Western squads completed victories that began Thursday night and as a result, they will ride in their respective semifinal rounds later today.
The Bulldog Hunt Seat team won six of a possible eight rides and dispatched host Baylor by a 1075-994 count. Winning in the Fences and Flat competitions was senior Kelly Bonau, and also posting victorious rides were Kelley Cowperthwait and Kitt Ritter in Fences, as well as Michelle Blair and Daisy Whelan in the Flat.
“I’m excited by our win today and feel good about advancing into the semifinal round,” Georgia coach Meghan Boenig said. “There have been quite a few upsets of the higher seeds here so far. We’ll need to be focused and ride cleanly and correctly, and those are things that we have done well all season.”
Georgia’s Western team easily handled SEC rival Auburn. The Bulldogs, who went 3-0-1 in Reining rides Thursday night, followed up with a pair of victories today from Alicia Shrum and Lauren Love.
The Hunt Seat Bulldogs will ride their semifinal match against second-seeded Texas A&M later Friday. Georgia’s Western team will face Oklahoma State simultaneous to the Hunt Seat matchup.
