March 24, 2008 | Men's Golf

ALPHARETTA, Ga. The No. 2-ranked Georgia men’s golf team is tied for ninth place after one round of the United States Collegiate Championship at the Golf Club of Georgia.

On Monday, the Bulldogs fired a 14-over-par 302 on the Lakeside Course’s par-72, 7,017-yard layout. Georgia is 12 shots behind UCLA (2-over 290) and is tied with Coastal Carolina.

“We’ve got some work to do to get back in it,” Georgia coach Chris Haack said. “This wasn’t the start we had hoped for. But there’s two rounds left, and anything can happen. We need to come out focused and try to chip away in the second round.”

Junior Adam Mitchell and sophomore Hudson Swafford each carded a 2-over 74 to pace the Bulldogs. They are tied for 24th, five behind UCLA’s Kevin Chappell, Oklahoma State’s Trent Leon, Georgia State’s Joel Sjoholm and Georgia Tech’s Cameron Tringale.

Freshman Harris English is 38th at 4-over 76, followed by junior Brian Harman in 51st at 6-over 78. Freshman Russell Henley is 71st with the Bulldogs’ non-counting score of 10-over 82.

The United States Collegiate Championship will continue on Tuesday and will conclude on Wednesday. Live results and tee times can be found at golfstat.com.
