March 24, 2008 | Volleyball

ATHENS, Ga. --- Briana McCarthy has been named an assistant volleyball coach at the University of Georgia as announced by UGA head coach Joel McCartney on Monday.

McCarthy, a native of Beaver Dam, Wis., joins the Bulldogs from Ohio State University, where she was a four-year letter winner for the Buckeyes from 2003-07. She joins Chad Hanson as assistant coaches for the Georgia program.

“Although Briana is new to the college coaching ranks, she posses the absolute essential qualities of a loyal top notch assistant,” Georgia head coach Joel McCartney said. “Her dedication as a member of the Ohio State program was instrumental in the decision to bring Bri aboard as a member of our staff. The recommendation from a legendary coach like Jim Stone was the selling point for Briana’s candidacy. The glowing comments Jim had for Bri made me feel like an idiot if I didn’t hire her.”

“Briana is a perfect match to compliment the recent hiring of Chad Hanson,” McCartney added. “He was instrumentally involved in the interviewing process and ultimately we feel like a connected group heading down the same road together. It is so very important that you feel good about the people working along side you in this business and that is most definitely the case here.”

McCarthy, who was a three-time team captain for the Buckeyes, played in 104 games during her senior season in 2007 displaying a multitude of skill assets by tallying 227 kills, 630 assists and 33 service aces while also coming away with 207 digs and 99 blocks, including 17 solo blocks.

“I am so excited about this opportunity to be a part of the University of Georgia Athletic Association and the volleyball program,” said McCarthy, who was a four-time Academic All-Big Ten Honoree. “Joel has proven to be a great leader through the hard work and commitment he has placed into the program. I was so drawn to this team after seeing the passion, dedication, and enthusiasm that Joel and Chad share with building the Bulldog program up. Our staff is not only about building a team but also being a part of a family. The energy and drive that Joel’s leadership brings to the program has already made great strides in accomplishing stronger expectations and goals for the team. This will enable the volleyball program to become another nationally competitive team at the University of Georgia very soon.”

Additionally, McCarthy has coached volleyball on the club level most recently with Matchpoint VBC from 2007-08. She has also worked with the Columbus Volleyball Academy (2004-06), Ohio State Nike Camps (2004-07) and All-American Volleyball Camps (2004-07).

In 2007, McCarthy also served as an intern for the Columbus Crew soccer promotional team, and she worked as a student assistant for the OSU facility management team.

McCarthy earned a degree in Sports and Leisure Studies from Ohio State University.
