Humphrey, Houts Named To AP All-SEC Teams
March 18, 2008 | Women's Basketball
ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia's Tasha Humphrey was named first-team All-SEC by the Associated Press on Tuesday for the fourth straight year and in the process became just the third four-time consensus All-SEC women's basketball player in league history.
Lady Bulldog Ashley Houts earned a spot on the AP's second team All-SEC squad.
Humphrey, who has been named first-team All-SEC by both league coaches and the AP in each of her four years at Georgia, joins former Lady Bulldog Kelly Miller and Mississippi State's LaToya Thomas as the only players to achieve that recognition. SEC coaches have named an All-SEC team since 1982, and Humphrey is one of nine players to be tabbed to those first-team squads on four occasions. The AP began its SEC post-season honors in 1997.
Humphrey, a 6-3, forward from Gainesville, Ga., now ranks No. 2 in career points and No. 4 in career rebounds in Lady Bulldog history. She is set to become just the second player to lead Georgia in scoring and rebounding for four consecutive seasons along with three-time Kodak All-American Janet Harris. This year, Humphrey is averaging 16.8 points and 9.0 rebounds per game.
Houts, a 5-6, sophomore, guard from Trenton, Ga., was the SEC Freshman of the Year last season. This year, she leads the Lady Bulldogs and ranks among SEC leaders in both assists (4.6 apg) and steals (2.7 spg). Houts tops the SEC in minutes per game at 36.6, an average that jumped to 39.1 in conference games. Houts has played every minute of 14 games this season, including a career-high 45 in an overtime victory against Florida State.
The Lady Bulldogs received their 25th bid to the NCAA Tournament on Monday, to tie Louisiana Tech at the No. 2 position among national leaders in all-time invitations to "March Madness." Georgia is 22-9 on the year and ranked No. 24 in the most recent edition of the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll. The Lady Dogs begin NCAA play on Sunday afternoon when they face Iowa at approximately 2:30 p.m. ET in Norfolk, Va.
