February 25, 2008 | Track & Field

ATHENS, Ga. --- Following four weekends of competition, Georgia’s track and field teams travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the 2008 SEC Indoor Championships on February 29-March 2. The Bulldogs have already visited the Randal Tyson Indoor Track Center for the Tyson Invitational (Feb. 15-16).

Those who qualify will return again to Arkansas’ campus for the NCAA Championships on March 14-15. The Lady Bulldogs have finished in the top four three out of the last four indoor seasons (2004-4th, 2006-1st, 2007-2nd) and are in the hunt for their second SEC indoor title in three seasons. The Bulldog men, ranked 19th in the latest USTFCCCA poll, tied for fourth in 2004 and last finished third place or better in 1994 (3rd).

Justin Gaymon, who is the top-ranked 400m sprinter in the SEC, is attempting to become the Bulldogs’ first sprinter to win an SEC championship since the switch was made from yards to meters.

So far during the 2008 indoor season, Levern Spencer has an NCAA automatic qualifying mark in the high jump after breaking the school record in the event with a mark of 6 feet, 2 3/4 inches.

Georgia has racked up 10 provisional qualifying marks. Nate Rolfe, John Freeman (weight), Kyle Helf (shot put), Jarrell Stewart (55m dash), Gaymon (400m dash), Wes Fuller (pole vault), Michael Proctor, Gordon Ritchie-Haughton, Baron Brown, Gaymon (4x400m relay), Ian Burrell (5000), Sarah Madebach (5000) and Natalie Picchetti (Mile) all have provisional marks going into the conference meet.
