Arby's Spotlight Student-Athlete of the Week: Alina Lee

Alina Lee


Alina Lee is an Early Childhood Education major from Athens, Georgia. She is a member of the UGA women's golf team. In May, Alina will graduate with a Bachelor's degree after only three years of college. She was named to the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll at the end of the 2005-06 academic year and the SEC Academic Honor Roll following 2006-07. She's also been named as a National Golf Coaches Association
All-American Scholar the past two seasons. Alina is the recipient of the Mary B. Dinos Scholarship.

 

BIOGRAPHY:

2006-07 Season
◊ For the second consecutive season, named to the NGCA’s All-Scholar team honoring players who have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or better
and who played in at least half of their team’s rounds during the season.
◊ Tabbed second-team All-SEC by league coaches.
◊ Selected as the SEC Golfer of the Week twice during the spring.
◊ In the lineup for nine stroke play events, including the last eight, and Georgia’s top individual finisher at the Lady Puerto Rico and UCF
Challenge.
◊ Became what is believed to be the youngest medalist in college golf history when she tied for top honors in Puerto Rico. Was exactly
16 years and eight months old on Feb. 25 the day she tied four others atop the leaderboard.
◊ Finished third at the UCF Challenge, completing an eight-round stretch, which she played at a combined 2-over...final two rounds at Stanford
at 1-under, Puerto Rico at 1-over and UCF at 2-over.

2005-06 Season
◊ Named to the NGCA’s All-Scholar team, a more significant honor considering Alina was a 15-year-old freshman.
◊ In the lineup for every event and the only Bulldog golfer in the 70s or below for every round.
◊ Fired an opening-round 69 at the Mason Rudolph, mixing five birdies with two bogeys in her career-best score.
◊ Carded a 1-under 71 in the Bryan National’s third round to help Georgia win the team title and post a season-best 284.
◊ Posted nine counting tallies in 10 postseason rounds played at the SECs, NCAA West Regional and NCAAs.
◊ Recorded her third and fourth top-20s at the SECs and NCAA West Regional.

Prep/Amateur
◊ Named second-team Rolex Junior All-America by the AJGA in 2004. An honorable mention selection in 2005 when she also participated in
the Canon Cup.
◊ Took up golf just before turning 10 after her family moved from Boston to Tampa. Two months later, placed second in her first tournament
a Greater Tampa Junior Golf Association event at Walt Disney.
◊ Burst onto the national scene in 2003 when, as a 13-year-old, she placed third in stroke play and advanced to the semifinals at the prestigious
Western Junior Girls’.
◊ Returned a year later to beat Amanda Blumenherst, 2-up, in the championship match to win the Western Junior. Became the youngest winner
ever, just 23 days after she turned 14. The previous youngest winner was a 15-year-old Nancy Lopez.
◊ Posted additional wins in 2004 at the Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic (youngest winner ever) and the AJGA’s Burgett H. Mooney
Jr. Rome Classic.
◊ Awarded a sponsor’s exemption into the LPGA’s 2004 Asahi Ryokuken International in North Augusta, S.C.
◊ In USGA competitions, reached the second round of match play at the 2005 Girls’ Junior and qualified for the 2005 and 2007 U.S. Women’s
Amateurs.
