ATHENS, Ga. --- Several University of Georgia student-athletes, men’s tennis coach Manuel Diaz and legendary radio broadcaster Larry Munson will be honored at the third annual Atlanta Sports Awards Monday at the Fox Theater in Atlanta.

Munson will be honored as recipient of the Furman Bisher Award, created for sports media excellence to recognize a member of the Atlanta sports media for outstanding coverage of local sports. The first award, which was given out in 2000, went to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s legendary sports columnist, Furman Bisher.

Former All-SEC defensive end Billy Payne will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Diaz will be honored as coach of the year and former tennis All-America John Isner and former swimming All-America Kara Lynn Joyce are among three finalists for college athlete of the year. The 2007 National Champion Georgia gymnastics team is a finalist for team of the year.

Created by the Atlanta Sports Council and presented by Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar, the Atlanta Sports Awards honors the most accomplished athletes and teams at all levels throughout the metro Atlanta community.

The Atlanta Sports Awards will honor 11 award recipients who distinguish themselves from the five million people living in the 29 metro Atlanta counties and surrounding areas. That includes all six Atlanta professional sports teams, 14 universities, 12 junior colleges and more than 250 public and private high schools.
