Men's Basketball Takes Down Virginia Tech, 67-66

December 10, 2008 | Men's Basketball

ATHENS ----- Albert Jackson powered in a layup with 29 seconds left and rebounded Virginia Tech’s last shot to help Georgia rally past the Hokies 67-66 in a non-conference basketball game here Tuesday night.

Jackson’s heroics capped a wild finish in this hotly contested game.  Cheick Diakite had given Virginia Tech a 66-65 lead with a pair of foul shots with 57 seconds left.  It was the fifth time the lead had changed hands in the final period.  Then, with the shot clock dwindling, Jackson took a feed from Corey Butler and muscled in a short bank shot that pushed the Bulldogs back in front.

The Hokies had two shots on their last full possession but failed to convert.  Hank Thorns penetrated and hoisted a jumper in the lane that missed.  Diakite rebounded and missed a second attempt, which Jackson grabbed before being tackled by Tech’s Jeff Allen with a half-second left.

“I was really, really proud of the way we bounced back from our game against Illinois,” Georgia head coach Dennis Felton said.  “I liked the way we showed toughness in this game, because it was a war, and we were looking at a deficit most of the game.  I was really proud of them down the stretch, when we made plays, both offensively and defensively, to win the game.”

Though neither team took full control of this game, Virginia Tech gained an early lead and kept the advantage through much of the second half.  On three occasions in the final period, the Hokies’ lead reached four points, the final time at 60-56 on a dunk by reserve Lewis Witcher with 8:03 left.  Tech had two subsequent possessions to increase the lead but did not score on either chance.

The Bulldogs achieved a 60-all tie when Jeremy Price rebounded Zac Swansey’s miss and dunked with 5:14 left.  Thereafter, the game was tied three more times and the lead changed hands twice more before Jackson’s winning basket in the final half-minute.

Georgia will take the next 11 days off from competition for Fall Semester final exams.  The Bulldogs’ next contest will be Dec. 20 at home against Wofford at 2:00 p.m. The game can be seen on CSS and all the action can be heard on the Georgia Bulldogs Radio Network and GXtra.
