December 10, 2008 | Equestrian

ATHENS, Ga. --- University of Georgia Equestrian head coach Meghan Boenig on Wednesday announced the signing of two talented Western riders to national letters-of-intent to attend UGA and compete for the Bulldogs next year: Becca Haaland of Edmond, Okla., and Carly Lambros of nearby Newborn, Ga.

Haaland is currently a senior at Deer Creek High School in Edmond, where she is also a member of the varsity Volleyball team. She has competed in Western events for the past nine years, and during that time she’s built quite an impressive resume. This past year Haaland was the Reserve World Champion in Working Cow Horse at the American Quarter Horse Youth Association (AQHYA) show. She was also the Youth Limited Reserve World Champion at the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) show, and was the 2008 Texas Circuit Champion.

“We are thrilled that Becca chose to join our program,” said UGA Western assistant coach Carly Veldman. “She is an extremely well-rounded and versatile rider. Her riding ability, team mindset, and work ethic will make her a huge asset to Georgia’s strong reining team.”

Lambros is in her senior year at George Walton Academy, which has produced several recent UGA Equestrian riders. She has shown in the AQHA All-Around for a number of years, and her greatest accomplishments include: Top 5 finish in Trail at the 2008 AQHA Congress show; AQHA Honor Roll champion in Equitation; Reserve Congress Champion in Hunt Seat Equitation.

“Having grown up in the horse industry, and ridden numerous horses, Carly should have an easy adjustment into the collegiate format,” Veldman said. “She is a very driven rider, very dedicated to her sport, and I think she will be a strong asset to the Horsemanship team. We’re very excited to have her enthusiasm on our team at Georgia.”
