Georgia Starts Getting Ready For Auburn

November 09, 2008 | Football

ATHENS, Ga.---The 13th-ranked Georgia football team returns to action Saturday against Auburn, marking the end of a four-game stretch on the road. For the second week in a row, kickoff will be at 12:34 p.m. ET as Raycom will televise the contest.

In the past three weeks, the Bulldogs (8-2, 5-2 SEC) have beaten No. 11 LSU in Baton Rouge, lost to No. 5 Florida in Jacksonville and outlasted Kentucky in Lexington. After Saturday’s tilt with the Tigers, Georgia will have an off week and then close out the regular against Georgia Tech in Athens on Nov. 29.

During his weekly Sunday media conference call, Richt said the Bulldogs are looking to secure another victory.

“The focus is 9-2, that’s the main thing, we’re sitting here with a pretty good season,” said Richt. “You look at the overall picture, we’re 8-2, the losses are to the No. 1 and No. 3 ranked teams in America. You don’t want to lose but it’s been to quality opponents. Hopefully at the end, we’ll have a strong finish. The biggest thing for us is the pride of playing for the red and black and the “G” on our helmet. It is meaningful to play our best each time out. I’m sure there are a hundred teams out there who would like to be where we’re at now. It’s been a good year, not a great year, and we’ll see where we finish.”

In injury news from the Kentucky game, Richt said that starting right tackle Justin Anderson will miss the Auburn game with a right foot injury and is questionable for the Tech game. Anderson, a redshirt freshman, started the game but did not play in the second half. Also, sophomore reserve fullback Justin Fields is out for the year due to a knee injury that happened during the UK contest. With Anderson’s injury, the Bulldogs are down to seven healthy offensive linemen. Georgia has used four different starting lineups on the line this year.

“I don’t know what we’re going to do,” said Richt. “We’re going to think it through. It will be probably Tuesday before we settle on it. There’s a good chance everyone will get in there, just not sure where we’ll have them lined up. We got Clint Boling, Chris Davis, Josh Davis, Ben Jones, Cordy Glenn, Kiante Tripp, and Tanner Strickland. We only had 57 plays yesterday, so we made them count.”

After allowing 38 points to Kentucky, Richt was asked about the recent play of the defense as LSU also scored 38 points in a loss to the Bulldogs while the Gators tallied 49 points.

“We are a team, and we’re not going to point fingers, certainly not in the media,” said Richt. “We will go back and look at the decisions whether it’s coaching or players execution. It takes the entire team to play good defense. On offense, it’s not having turnovers, it’s your special teams needing to play well, and the defense has to play well too. We don’t need to have penalties to keep a drive going when you’ve stopped them. It’s a team game.”

In the past two games, opponents have had four touchdown drives that covered 10 yards or less plus three more of less than 41 yards. These short scoring drives were aided greatly by either a miscue on offense, special teams or defense.

The Georgia-Auburn game on Nov. 15 will be televised regionally on Raycom, with kickoff slated for 12:34 p.m. ET. All Georgia games also are broadcast live on the Bulldog Radio Network on AM 750 WSB in Atlanta and on both 106.1 FM and 960 The Ref in Athens. The radio audio also can be heard worldwide on both georgiadogs.com, the official website of UGA Athletics, and on XM satellite radio.
