Despite winning two of four events and tying a third, the second-ranked Georgia Equestrian team lost the second leg of its 3-day tour of
Texas, dropping a 10-9 decision to #6 TCU in
Mansfield, Texas, on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (6-2) took victories in Equitation Over Fences and also in Reining. They tied the Horned Frogs in Equitation on the Flat. The decisive points for TCU came in Western Horsemanship, in which it won four of the five rides.
“I was happy with our rides today,” Georgia coach Meghan Boenig said. “I just don’t think that the scores accurately reflected the quality of our rides. TCU rode really well today and I give credit to them. But we had some outstanding efforts today.”
Foremost among the top Georgia riders on Saturday was freshman Katie Hagerty. The Wakefield, R.I., native survived a balky horse to record Georgia’s highest score in the Flat competition and take MVP honors. Her 5-point win enabled the Bulldogs to salvage a 2-2 draw in the event.
Other Hunt Seat winners for Georgia included Michelle Morris, another freshman who won points in both events, Kelley Cowperthwait in Fences and yet another rookie, Emma Lipman over Fences.
Georgia won a 3-2 decision in the Reining competition, with Kate Stewart, Sarah Locker and Nichole Grant all winning points. In the Horsemanship event, only Lauren Love posted a victorious ride.
Georgia concludes its weekend swing through Texas with a Hunt Seat-only match against SMU in Dallas on Sunday morning. It also finishes the fall portion of the Bulldogs’ 2008-09 schedule.
