Which Of Your Nine NCAA Titles Has Been Most Memorable
October 07, 2008 | Gymnastics
Brittany from Alpharetta asks Suzanne....
I hope that by next spring I can ask which of your TEN national titles has been most memorable, but for now, which of your nine national titles has been most memorable and why?
Dear Brittany:
That is difficult to answer as all the championships were so different and meant a great deal for different reasons. 1987, of course was special because it was the first. 1989 means a great deal because it was our first title won at home. 1993 is memorable because our gymnastics difficultly and execution were so unbelievable as we scored 198 back when that was unheard of. And in 1993, I began understanding how adversity reveals character as Heather Stepp put our team on a mission....I can go on and on.
But if I had to choose one, I would say 2005. It was that year that we redefined “what we stand for” as a program. We put so much time and energy into mental toughness and team chemistry and it paid off. Going from number 12 in the country and almost NOT making NCAA’s to winning the Title was one of my most memorable times as a coach....but then again winning after Kelsey and Ashley were hurt was quite a memory as well.
Sincerely,
Suzanne
