January 16, 1997 - Georgia sophomore swimmer Kristy Kowal helped the United States capture the gold in the 400-meter medley relay in American record setting time at the FINA World Championships. Earlier in the week, Kowal won the 100-meter breaststroke and placed second in the 200-meter breaststroke.
