Georgia Football Practice Notes: September 5, 2007

ATHENS, Ga. --- The 11th-ranked Georgia football team continued preparations for its Southeastern Conference opener with a two-hour workout Wednesday.

In his post-practice media session, Bulldog head coach Mark Richt said the Bulldogs looked tired.

“It was kind of sloppy today,” said Richt. “I know it’s a long season but we shouldn’t look tired already. Tonight, we’ll decide if we need to reduce the game plan, perhaps simplify it. We’ve installed a lot and some things we’re not executing well.”

Also, Richt announced that senior starting defensive end Marcus Howard will wear jersey number 17 Saturday instead of his normal 38 to honor teammate and fellow South Carolina native Antavious Coates. Coates, a redshirt sophomore strong safety who wore 17, saw his playing career end due to his fourth ACL injury. He had one knee injury in high school and three more in the preseason since he’s been at Georgia. He was never able to play a snap in Sanford Stadium.

“Antavious will be one of our captains Saturday and Marcus will wear his jersey,” said Richt. “We’re not trying to pull a fast one on anybody. Everybody comes to Georgia with the same dreams, to play, to win championships and just see how good you are. We all feel for Antavious, it’s been hard for everybody, and he’s had a great attitude through it all.”

Georgia plays host to South Carolina Saturday, Sept. 8, at Sanford Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 5:45 p.m. and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2. All Georgia games are broadcast live on the Bulldog Radio Network on AM 750 WSB in Atlanta and on both 106.1 FM and 960 The Ref in Athens. The radio audio also can be heard worldwide on both georgiadogs.com, the official website of UGA Athletics, and on XM satellite radio, channel 143.
