Dooley To Receive Homer Rice Award Monday

ATHENS, Ga. --- Former University of Georgia Director of Athletics Vince Dooley will receive the top award presented by the Division 1-A Athletic Directors Association Monday in Dallas.
Dooley will receive the Homer Rice Award presented annually to the retired Athletic Director with a distinguished career and who has made a significant impact on the Director of Athletics profession and intercollegiate athletics. The award is named for Homer Rice, former Athletic Director at Georgia Tech and founder and first president of the Division 1-A Athletic Directors Association.
Dooley served as UGA Director of Athletics from 1979-2004 during which time he developed one of the country’s most successful overall athletics programs. Georgia teams won 20 national team championships and 78 Southeastern conference team titles during his tenure.
Among others, the list of former winners of the Rice Award include Dick Schultz, Virginia; Don Canham, Michigan; Gene Corrigan, Virginia and Notre Dame; Ced Dempsey, Houston and also Executive Director of the NCAA; Jim Jones, Ohio State; and John Swofford, North Carolina and Commissioner, Atlantic Coast Conference.
