Former Bulldog Leon Wins Second Futures Tour Title

August 12, 2007 | Women's Golf

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. --- Former Georgia golfer Taylor Leon carded a 3-under 69 on Sunday to complete a wire-to-wire victory at the Betty Puskar Golf Classic, her second win in five tournaments played on the Duramed Futures Tour since turning professional in June. Leon finished at 13-under 203, three shots ahead of the rest of the field.

Leon was the 2007 SEC Golfer of the Year and a first-team All-American for the Bulldogs last season as a sophomore but chose to pursue a professional career following the NCAA Championships. In July, Leon won the CIGNA Golf Classic in Bloomfield, Conn.

Leon has now climbed to the No. 12 position on the season-long Futures Tour money list despite playing in only five events. Every other golfer in the top 25 has participated in at least 10 tournaments this season. The top-five finishers on the final 2007 money list will receive exempt cards on the LPGA Tour for 2008. Leon has won $25,112, slightly more than $10,000 away from the current No. 5 tally with three tournaments remaining.

Leon opened up a two-shot lead after shooting 65 in Friday’s opening round. She expanded her edge by a stroke with a 69 in Saturday’s second round and maintained that advantage on the final leaderboard. On Sunday, she bogeyed No. 2 but bounced back to birdie No. 4, No. 5, No. 6 and No. 8 to turn at 3-under. Leon birdied No. 13 and bogeyed No. 15 to finish the back half at even par.
