Former Bulldog Taylor Leon Wins CIGNA Golf Classic
July 16, 2007 | Women's Golf
The victory and an $11,200 check came in just Leon’s third tournament as a professional. Previously, she finished 12th in her Futures debut in mid-June and qualified for but missed the cut at the U.S. Women’s Open. Leon won 2007 SEC Golfer of the Year and first-team All-America honors this spring, her sophomore season at Georgia, but turned pro following the NCAA Championships in May.
After carding consecutive rounds of 2-under 70 on Friday and Saturday, Leon entered Sunday’s final round in second place on the leaderboard and three shots off the pace of Mollie Fankhauser. Both golfers struggled on Sunday, with Leon carding a 75 and Fankhauser shooting 78 to force the playoff. Leon secured the victory on the first extra hole.
With the victory, Leon vaulted 111 spaces on the Futures money list for the 2007 season, from 132 to 21st. The top five players on the Futures Tour money list earn automatic exempt status on the LPGA Tour in 2008.
