Bulldogs Competing In Various Summer Baseball Leagues

ATHENS, Ga. --- The Cape Cod Baseball Summer League season opens Friday, and four Georgia Bulldogs will be playing for the defending champion Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.
Shortstop Gordon Beckham, pitcher Stephen Dodson and infielder Luke Stewart are on the Opening Day roster for the Red Sox. A fourth Bulldog, Trevor Holder, will join the club later this summer as a replacement for Dodson as both pitchers plan to play about a month. Georgia pitcher Nathan Moreau returns for his second season in Cape Cod as he will suit up for the Chatham A’s. The CCBL features some of the nation’s top prospects with 203 former players selected in last week’s Major League Baseball draft.
The summer season already has begun for several Bulldogs. Infielder Rich Poythress is off to a hot start for the Thomasville (N.C.) HiToms as he leads the Coastal Plain League (CPL) with an .829 Slugging Percentage, batting .429-3-15. The HiToms won the 2006 CPL title. One of Poythress’ teammates is outfielder Adam Fuller, a Bulldog signee from Columbus, Ga., who spent the past two seasons at Andrew College. The CPL, which had 83 former players selected in last week’s MLB draft, features 15 teams located in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
Georgia’s Mike Freeman, Joey Lewis, Dean Weaver and Ryan Woolley are regular contributors for the Keene (N.H.) SwampBats of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Weaver tossed five shutout innings in earning a victory as the Opening Night starter before a record crowd of 3,041. Also, outfielder Matt Cerione is a member of the Torrington (Conn.) Twisters. The NECBL, which opened play June 8, features 12 teams in six states.
A pair of Bulldogs in pitcher Iain Sebastian and outfielder Kurt Waid is playing in the nine-team Texas Collegiate League based in North Texas. Summer baseball leagues wrap up play in early-to-mid August.
