Moreau Named SEC Pitcher Of The Week
May 07, 2007 | Baseball
ATHENS, Ga. --- University of Georgia sophomore left-hander Nathan Moreau has been named the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Moreau, a 6-4, 200-pound native of Lilburn, Ga., tossed seven shutout innings in blanking top-ranked Vanderbilt 7-0 here this past Saturday.
Moreau registered a career-high eight strikeouts and allowed just one walk and four hits in snapping the Commodores eight-game winning streak. It marked the first time Vanderbilt had been shutout since the
2006 season opener against San Diego, and it was the first time in conference play since LSU blanked VU 3-0 on May 1, 2005.
Vanderbilt had only two runners advance in to scoring position: one on a leadoff double in the second inning, and he never advanced; and in the seventh, a leadoff single and a walk. Then, Moreau struck out next two Commodores and got a groundout to end the threat. Sophomore Trevor Holder pitched the final two innings and preserved the shutout. Moreau improved to 4-2 with a 4.75 ERA on the year.
Moreau is the first Bulldog this season to garner an SEC weekly honor. Last year, Georgia pitcher Brooks Brown was honored twice and pitcher Mickey Westphal once. Moreau was named SEC Freshman of the Week once in 2006 too. Also on Monday, Moreau's outing was voted the Southeast Regional Performance of the Week on InsidePitching.com. Georgia returns to action Wednesday when it plays host to Georgia Tech at 7:06 p.m. (CSS-TV).
