Final Eight Set In NCAA Tennis Singles And Doubles
May 26, 2007 | General
ATHENS, Ga. The Men’s and Women’s NCAA Singles and Doubles Tennis Championships continued Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, as the field was narrowed to eight in men’s and women’s singles competitors and doubles teams.
In men’s singles, the quarterfinals will feature all top eight seeds except for one player. Unseeded Alex Slovic of Washington continued his run with a three-set win over Ole Miss’ Robbye Poole in the Round of 16.
All eight of the other Round of 16 match-ups were won in straight sets. Top-seeded John Isner advanced over LSU’s Ken Skupski in a tight contest, 7-6(8), 7-5. He had 34 aces in that match, including six in the first-set tiebreaker.
“I served exceptionally well today and I had to because Ken was playing really well,” Isner said. “We have played four times in the past and he has beaten me twice, so he has had my number in the past. He is a good friend of mine and I have a lot of respect for Ken.”
Isner continues his journey toward a singles title on his home court Saturday at 10 a.m. against fifth-seeded Steven Moneke of Ohio State.
Georgia’s Luis Flores and Travis Helgeson dropped their Round of 16 matches. Flores lost to third-seeded Jesse Levine of Florida while Helgeson fell to second-seeded Somdev Devvarman of Virginia. Levine is the only freshman left in the men's draw.
Five of the top eight seeds made the quarterfinals in the women’s draw. It took a late comeback by top-seeded Audra Cohen of Miami, who dropped her first set 6-3 and was down 4-0 in the second. But she came back to win 12 of the last 14 games and took the match.
“Durkin is such a momentum player, and when she got her momentum going it was tough to stop,” Cohen commented. “Once I stopped feeding her balls for winners, I was OK. I started hitting my returns better, and once I did that, I saw a lot more of the court open up. There seemed to be a lot more opportunities. I just kept saying to myself that wasn’t the way I wanted to go out. I didn’t want to leave here playing like this.”
The No. 3 seed Melanie Gloria of Fresno State was ousted by unseeded Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor. Zemenova won the 2005 singles championship in Athens as a freshman and is the only remaining active past champion still alive in the tournament.
“I really like playing in Athens,” Zemenova said. “It is such a great atmosphere. I feel so confident here. I was very excited when I heard this year’s NCAA Championships were in Georgia.”
Georgia senior Natalie Frazier won a dramatic three-set contest to keep the No. 7 seed’s hopes alive, and she will face second-seeded Megan Falcon of LSU on Saturday at noon for a chance at the semifinals.
Stanford freshman Erin Burdette pulled off another upset on the women’s side, as she defeated a No. 9-16 seed Georgia Rose of Northwestern in three sets to remain alive. She represents the lone freshmen still left in the field.
In men’s doubles, all eight seeded pairs except for one advanced the quarterfinal round Friday. Top-seeded Isner and Flores of Georgia defeated Tennessee’s Adam Hubble and Ben Rogers of Tennesee in straight sets, though both went to tiebreakers that Georgia won 7-5 and 7-3, respectively. The Bulldogs tandem will face 5-8-seeded Mariusz Adamski and Todd Paul of Wake Forest at 3 p.m. Saturday in the quarterfinals.
Four of the eight seeded doubles pairs in the women’s draw moved on to the quarterfinals. Top-seeded Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic advanced with an easy 6-1, 6-2 victory over North Carolina’s Caitlin Collins and Sanaz Marand. Pepperdine’s unseeded duo of Bianca Dulgheru and Sylvia Kosakowski knocked off Northwestern’s Alexis Prousis and Georgia Rose to continue its run after beating a top eight seed in Thursday’s Round of 32.
