Round Of 16 Set In NCAA Singles And Doubles

ATHENS, Ga. --- The Round of 16 in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Men's and Women's Tennis Championships were set Thursday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex with play set to continue Friday with the first singles matches at 10 a.m. followed by doubles at 2 p.m.
In men's singles, 11 of the seeded players advanced to the Round of 16 and five unseeded players claimed spots. All individuals making it to this round earn the distinction as an All-American.
Top-seeded John Isner of Georgia breezed past Bassam Beidas of Pepperdine, 6-3, 6-1, to advance past the second round of the NCAA Singles Tournament for the first time in his career. Bulldogs Luis Flores and Travis Helgeson also advanced with straight-sets wins. This marks Flores' first appearance in the Round of 16 as well, while it is Helgeson's third in a row.
The three Bulldogs continue play Friday with Isner facing LSU's Ken Skupski at 10 a.m., Flores battling Jesse Levine of Florida at 10 a.m. as well and Helgeson playing Virginia's Somdev Devvarman at 11 a.m.
Bryan Koniecko of Ohio State battled No. 9-16-seeded Erling Tveit of Ole Miss to a three-set win for his spot in the Round of 16. Unseeded players also advancing to Friday's Round of 16 were LSU's Ken Skupski, Miami's Daniel Vallverdu, Alex Slovic of Washington and Robbye Poole of Ole Miss.
Ten of the women's seeded players advanced to the Round of 16 with six unseeded players also earning bids and All-American distinction.
Defending NCAA Singles Champion Susie Babos was knocked out in the Round of 32 by Stanford's Lindsay Burdette in straight sets. With the men's 2006 singles champion, Benjamin Kohlloeffel of UCLA, having to withdraw his name from the tournament with an injury, this upset ensures there will be a new champion on both sides in 2007.
In fact, the only remaining singles champion still alive is Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor, who won the women's singles title in 2006. An unseeded player in this year's tournament, Zemenova earned a spot in the Round of 16 with a three-set win over Vanderbilt's Amanda Taylor on Thursday.
Georgia's Natalie Frazier, who beat both Babos and Zemenova in the 2007 season, moved on to the round of 16 with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Katrina Zheltova of Sacramento State. The Bulldog senior continues her quest for a singles title on her home court Friday at 1:30 p.m. against Stanford's Theresa Logar.
Other unseeded players advancing to the Round of 16 from the women's draw were Stanford's Lindsay Burdette, UCLA's Tracy Lin, Florida's Megan Alexander and Csilla Borsanyi and California's Nina Henkel.
The Round of 16 was also set for both doubles brackets as well. In the men's draw all top eight seeds advanced, including the No. 1-seeded pair of Georgia's Isner and Flores who beat Dan Hanegby and Saurabh Kohli of Brown, 6-4, 6-1. The other Bulldog duo in the tournament of Matic Omerzel and Helgeson lost to second-seeded Devvarman and Treat Huey of Virginia, 7-6(5), 6-3.
After completing 10 a.m. singles matches, Isner and Flores will play a doubles match against Tennessee's Adam Hubble and Ben Rogers at 4 p.m.
