An Update of the Fila/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings

To conclude the regular-season, both the Georgia men and Stanford women are still atop the collegiate tennis rankings. Both also were announced as the top overall seeds for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Georgia has lost just one match in the last two years the NCAA final to Pepperdine in 2006. After completing their second straight perfect regular season, the Bulldogs are looking to win the program’s fifth title in front of their home crowd. The Stanford women have won the title the past three years and are trying for the program’s 16th overall.

Following Georgia in the men’s top 10 are Ohio State, Virginia, Baylor, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Mississippi, Oklahoma State, UCLA and Illinois. Behind Stanford in the women’s poll are Georgia, Georgia Tech, Florida, Northwestern, Clemson, Notre Dame, USC, Miami and California.

All of these teams will play in NCAA Tournament First and Second Round matches May 11-13 with hopes of advancing to Athens, Ga., for the NCAA Championships on May 17-18.

This Week's Spotlight
NCAA Bracket

Now that the bracket has been released, here is a look at some teams in prime spots to make a run for the 2007 NCAA title.

Earning the top four seeds for the men were Georgia, Ohio State, Baylor and Virginia. Georgia, last year’s NCAA Runners-up and undefeated in the regular season for the second straight year, are playing for the program’s fifth title in front of a home crowd. The Bulldogs were the only team to beat Ohio State this year, doing so 4-0 in the National Team Indoors. They also defeated Baylor and Virginia, both of which enter the tournament with just three losses on their resumes.

For the women, the top four seeds are Stanford, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Florida. Stanford’s only loss of the year was to Georgia Tech in the National Team Indoors, while the Yellow Jackets suffered four defeats this season including one to Georgia. The in-state rivals are set up for a potential semifinal match-up. Florida has lost only twice all year, both times at the hands of the Georgia Bulldogs.
