California Women's Tennis Advances To NCAA Quarterfinal

ATHENS, Ga. --- The 10th-seeded California Golden Bears (22-6) earned a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2007 NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships in Athens, Ga., with a 4-0 upset win over the seventh-seeded Clemson Tigers (22-5) Friday evening at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The match was clinched by Cristina Visico at the No. 5 singles position as she posted a 7-6, 6-1 win over Maria Brito.

California snatched the early momentum in the match as the Golden Bears won the doubles point. After falling at the first doubles spot, 8-1, Cal bounced back to even up doubles play, taking an 8-2 decision at the second position. Claire Ilsinkas and Bojana Bobusic then locked up the doubles point in Cal’s favor with an 8-6 win in the third slot, defeating Maria Brito and Carol Salge.

In singles play, the Golden Bears took a 2-0 lead as Salge defeated Zsuzsanna Fodor, 6-2, 6-0 at the second spot. Next to finish was Cal’s Nina Henkel as she took down Estefania Balda, 6-2, 6-1, setting Brito up for the clinch.

Cal will take on Georgia in the quarterfinals at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex Sunday, May 20. That match is slated to begin at 6 p.m. and will be played in Henry Feild Stadium.
