May 18, 2007 | General

ATHENS, Ga. In the third upset of the day, the 12th-seeded USC men’s tennis team (23-2) upended No. 5 Notre Dame (26-4), 4-3, in the NCAA Round of 16 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

The Trojans now are set for a quarterfinal match with No. 2 Virginia on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Cavaliers won their Round of 16 match, 4-1, over Wake Forest.

Notre Dame began the contest by winning a highly contested doubles point. The teams split and Nos. 2 and 3 doubles and it came down to court one. There it went all the way to a tiebreaker, which the Irish captured 7-3.

The close singles matches went the other way, however, as USC won on four courts to overtake the lead and clinch the win. It was Gary Sacks who cemented the Trojan victory with a three-set win on court five over Ryan Keckley.
