Fighting Illini Upset Rebels, 4-3
May 17, 2007 | General
ATHENS, Ga. It came down to the No. 1 court between two top-15 opponents, and Illnois’ No. 5-ranked Kevin Anderson held on to beat Ole Miss’ No. 13-ranked Erling Tveit and lift the No. 10-seeded Fighting Illini to a 4-3 upset over No. 7 Ole Miss on Thursday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
The Illinois upset marked the second of the day, as No. 17 N.C. State also upended No. 11 Texas earlier in the morning. The Fighting Illini advanced to play No. 2 Ohio State, which shut out LSU, 4-0, in its Round of 16 match-up.
The Rebels won the doubles point behind 8-5 victories on courts one and three, including an upset by Tveit and Eric Claesson over Anderson and Ryan Rowe on court one.
In singles play, Ole Miss won straight-sets decisions on courts two and six, but Illinois pulled out the remaining courts. All matches had been completed except for court one, which was still in a second set. Ole Miss had won the first, but Illinois won the second and the decisive third to complete the upset.
