Baylor Defeats Alabama to Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals

May 17, 2007 | General

ATHENS, Ga. In the first match completed in the NCAA Round of 16, the #3-seeded Baylor men’s tennis team defeated Alabama, 4-0, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

The Bears advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face N.C. State on Saturday at 9 a.m. N.C. State defeated Texas, 4-3, in its Round of 16 match.

Baylor took the doubles point on the top two courts to earn the early lead. They looked to have the match under control in singles as well, winning first sets on all six courts. Lars Poerschke on court one and Dominik Mueller on court five finished straight-sets matches to give the Bears a 3-0 advantage.

But the Tide would not roll away quietly, taking second sets on the remaining four courts. There was not enough time for a comeback, however, as Baylor closed out the match on court four. The Bears’ Matija Zgaga defeated Alabama’s Mathieu Thibuadeau, 6-2, in the third set to clinch the victory for Baylor.
