April 26, 2007 | Women's Basketball
ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia's Ashley Houts, a 5-6, point guard from Trenton, Ga., was named the the Young All-America team featuring the nation's top freshmen announced by gballmag.com on Thursday.
Houts already was named SEC Freshman of the Year by both league coaches and the Associated Press after helping the Lady Bulldogs to a 27-7 record, a runner-up finish in the SEC regular-season standings and the "Sweet 16" round of the NCAA Tournament. She was tabbed SEC Freshman of the Week four times during the 16-week campaign and was selected to the All-SEC Freshman
team.
"Ashley is most deserving of this honor," head coach Andy Landers said. "I have not researched it but I think it would be hard for me to imagine there is a freshman who played as much and as many minutes as Ashley Houts did for us. In playing those minutes, she filled them with quality performances night after night."
Houts averaged 9.4 points in a team-high 33.7 minutes played for the Lady Bulldogs during the 2006-07 season. Among SEC statistical leaders, she finished the year ranked No. 2 in minutes played (33.7), No. 3 in steals (2.74), No. 8 in assists (3.65), No. 9 in free throw percentage (.772) and No. 10 in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.28). Houts broke Sherill Baker's Lady Bulldog freshman record for steals, finishing with 93, and also tied the Georgia single-game record for thefts with 10 against Memphis.
Houts is the Lady Bulldogs' 15th Freshman All-America selection all-time, including the eighth in the last 10 seasons alone.
