April 25, 2007 | Baseball

ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia (15-26) continues a five-game road trip Wednesday at Western Carolina (28-12) at 7 p.m., and then the Bulldogs head to Lexington, Ky., for a three-game SEC series with Kentucky (27-12-1, 7-10-1) starting Friday. Georgia will start freshman left-hander Alex McRee (2-4, 3.91) against the Catamounts. It will be his third start of the year.
WCU beat Georgia 3-1 in Athens on March 13th and the rematch was supposed to have been played on April 11th but was postponed due to rain. The Catamounts are on a five-game winning streak following Tuesday’s 15-8 win over High Point, and they have won 14 of their last 15 contests. Georgia leads the all-time series with WCU 34-17, and this will be its first trip to WCU since 1992, an 8-4 Catamount win. In the 2007 meeting here between the Bulldogs and WCU, Georgia collected 16 hits but managed just one run while John Ingram’s three-run home run in the ninth off closer Joshua Fields was the difference.
On Tuesday, Georgia pounded #24 Ga. Tech 10-7 at Turner Field in front of a crowd of 21,620. This was the fifth straight year the teams squared off at the home of the Atlanta Braves in a benefit for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The Bulldogs now hold a 4-1 edge in the series at Turner Field. The rubber game of the Georgia Tech series will be May 9th in Athens at Foley Field.
Offense Comes Alive Georgia's offense produced 10 runs on 15 hits in a 10-7 win over #24 Ga. Tech Tuesday at Turner Field. Junior right fielder Matt Olson (.317-4-29) takes over the top batting average on the club after a career night, going 4-for-5 with 6 RBI in the win over the Yellow Jackets. Olson finished a triple shy of the cycle, and his two-run home run came over the 400 foot sign in dead centerfield. Georgia’s top hitter for much of the year has been senior centerfielder Jonathan Wyatt (.311-4-28). Recently, Wyatt eclipsed the 200 mark for career games played. He ranks ninth all-time in Bulldog history with 207 games. Doug Radziewicz owns the Georgia record, appearing in 242 games from 1988-91.
Junior third baseman Ryan Peisel (.279-2-15) is riding an eight-game hitting streak, and in this stretch, he batting .486 (17-for-35) with nine RBI. Sophomore shortstop Gordon Beckham leads the team with nine home runs and 35 RBI while batting .288. Freshman Rich Poythress (.316-2-11) leads the team in SEC action, batting .367 with two home runs and eight RBI while Beckham is at .310-3-8.
Georgia will need to continue to produce this weekend when facing a talented Kentucky lineup. The Wildcats play host to Louisville Wednesday. The Wildcats lead the SEC in several offensive categories, including runs scored (369), triples (18), RBI (335), and on-base percentage (.452). UK seniors Sean Coughlin and Mike Brown are two of the more dangerous hitters. Coughlin leads the league with 54 RBI and Brown paces the SEC in runs scored with 54. Brown’s .406 batting average ranks fourth in the league and his .528 on-base percentage is a club-best.
