Arkansas Takes Series With 9-3 Win Sunday
April 22, 2007 | Baseball
ATHENS, Ga. --- Arkansas junior Jess Todd pitched a complete game six-hitter to lead the ninth-ranked Razorbacks to a 9-3 series-clinching win over Georgia Sunday at Foley Field.
Offensively, the Razorbacks (32-11, 13-5 SEC) were led by designated hitter Jeff Nutt and catcher Brian Walker who drove in three runs apiece to pace a 12-hit attack. Todd improved to 5-2, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Georgia sophomore starter Nathan Moreau (2-2) was chased in the fourth after surrendering five runs on seven hits as the Bulldogs dropped to 14-26 overall and 6-12 in the SEC.
Down 5-0 in the fourth, Georgia got on the board when senior Jonathan Wyatt led off with a double and later scored on a groundout by freshman Rich Poythress (2-for-4). With a 6-2 lead in the ninth, Walker connected for a three-run home run off freshman Justin Earls to make it 9-2. The Bulldogs managed a run in the bottom of the frame with three straight singles by Gordon Beckham, Poythress and senior Matt Olson. Beckham missed out on a double down the line when the ball he hit struck the base umpire and bounced to shortstop Matt Willard. Then, Todd got freshman Joey Lewis to bounce in to a game-ending double play. The Razorbacks turned four double plays on the afternoon and seven in the series.
“We’re running out of excuses, we simply have to play better,” said Georgia coach David Perno. “The last three weekends, we’ve had one guy step up on the mound and that’s Stephen Dodson. He has won all three of his starts and we’re waiting for another guy to come through and nobody has these past three weekends.”
Up next, Georgia faces Georgia Tech Tuesday at Turner Field in Atlanta. This is the fifth straight year the teams will square at the home of the Atlanta Braves in a benefit for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta billed as the “Spring Classic For Kids.” The Bulldogs hold a 3-1 edge in the series there. A crowd of 19,119 saw Georgia win a 5-4 thriller in 11 innings in 2006. The 2006 event raised more than $220,000 and proceeds from the game were used to help purchase an intra-operative MRI machine for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. All tickets are $10 and first pitch is scheduled for 7:06 p.m. The game will be televised live by SportSouth.
