Gretzmacher Leads Georgia With An NCAA Provisional Mark

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- Senior Sarah Gretzmacher picked up an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the heptathlon to jumpstart Georgia's action at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Friday.
Gretzmacher, who advanced to the 2006 NCAA Championships in the heptathlon, racked up 5,187 points to take second at the meet after completing her first heptathlon of the season. Gretzmacher went into the heptathlon’s second day in third place and was able to surge into second place thanks to her Day Two performance.
Finishing no less than fourth place in her final three events on Friday ended up locking Gretzmacher into second place. After she tied for fourth in the long jump (18 feet, 2 ½ inches), Gretzmacher came away with a javelin throw of 127-8 to take second. At the conclusion of the 800, which is the heptathlon’s final event, Gretzmacher crossed the finish line in 2:25.10 to be the fourth finisher out of 12 competitors.
On Thursday, Gretzmacher won the high jump after clearing 5-7 and finished in the top five in another pair of events. In the shot put, the Arnold, Mo., native approached her personal-best effort in the shot put (36-6.25) to take third and in the 100 hurdles, Gretzmacher registered a career-best time of 14.89 for fifth place. She also managed an eighth-place finish in the 200 after crossing the finish line in 26.49.
Competing in his first collegiate decathlon, freshman Tommy Barrineau finished sixth after scoring 5,929 points and highlighted his performance with wins in both the 400-meter dash and the 1500.
During Friday's action, Barrineau crossed the finish line first in the 1500 in 4:37.16 during the decathlon’s final event. Barrineau was also able to record a javelin throw of 154 feet for sixth place, which helped to lock down his final standing.
Barrineau completed five of his 10 events at the Sam Bailey Stadium on Thursday. Barrineau, who is the son of four- time All-American and Bulldog Olympian James Barrineau, won the 400 with a time of 50.80. He also tied for third in the high jump (6-0.75), took eighth in the 100 (11.97), managed a 10th-place finish in the shot put (32-6.50) and finished 12th in the long jump (19-5).
