No. 14 Lady Dogs Edge No. 7 LSU 53-51

February 01, 2007 | Women's Basketball

ATHENS, Ga. --- Ashley Houts nailed a jumper as the buzzer sounded giving the Georgia Lady Bulldogs a 53-51 victory over No. 7 LSU Thursday night at Stegeman Coliseum. With the win, Georgia improves to 19-4 overall and 6-2 in the SEC, while the Lady Tigers drop to 20-3 on the season and 6-2 in conference action.

“This was a typical Georgia-LSU game,” said head coach Andy Landers. “It’s kind of how all our games have gone. They are always hard fought. Both teams do an excellent job of guarding each other.”

Seven of the last nine games between Georgia and LSU have been decided by seven points or less including four that were one- or two-point decisions.

Both Georgia’s Tasha Humphrey and LSU’s Sylvia Fowles finished the game with double-doubles. Humphrey posted 15 points and 12 boards, while Fowles collected 17 points and 18 boards. Angel Robinson chipped in 12 second-half points for Georgia, while LSU’s Quianna Chaney poured in a game-high 20 points.

Chaney knocked down a three-pointer sparking a 7-2 run over the first 3:11 of the game for the Lady Tigers. Houts hit a pair of free throws at 16:25 to bring Georgia to within three points of the lead.

Defensive boards for LSU limited the Lady Dogs to one-shot opportunities early on in the half. They would go scoreless over the next 2:26 until Megan Darrah hit a three-pointer bringing Georgia to within one.

Chaney answered back on the Lady Tigers’ next possession with her second three putting LSU on top 11-7. Its largest lead of eight points came for the first time just minutes later when Ashley Thomas hit both of her shots from the charity stripe at 8:35.

The Lady Dogs cut their deficit to two points on two occasions with the second coming at 1:30 when Houts layed it up for two. The Lady Tigers would score three more points before the break taking the 26-21 lead.

Neither team shot well from the floor in the first with Georgia going 7-for-28 and LSU hitting just 7-of-27.

Cori Chambers drained a three-point bucket putting the Lady Dogs on the board first in the second half. Georgia continued to keep it close and gradually chipped away at the Lady Tigers’ lead.

Chambers’ steal with just under nine minutes to play set up a Humphrey three-pointer giving Georgia its first lead of the night at 41-40. The Lady Dogs looked like they were pulling away when the margin hit seven, but LSU brought it back to within two points and then eventually tied it with eight seconds remaining.

Houts started and finished the final drive of the contest as she connected on the buzzer-beater to seal the deal for the Lady Dogs.

The Lady Dogs will travel to Knoxville to take on No. 3 Tennessee Monday, Feb. 5. The game is scheduled to tip at 7:00 p.m. (ET) and will televised nationally on ESPN2.
